I think the setting is the surface of Venus; The story starts out following a small, single celled organism that is drawn to a light in the sky which turns out to be a spacecraft from earth. The light in the sky inspires rapid evolution of the entire species and due to their small size exponential growth. The earth craft finally reaches Venus at which point the local species has far outpaced human evolution and they are able to assist with human survival by stopping a supernova of the sun.
