Looking for the title of an old SciFi series

The first book starts out with a man who is running (I don't remember why) and is wounded (or simply exhausted) He ends up in a cave lying on the ground and staring up at the moon wishing he could be there. Next thing he knows, he wakes up on the moon where he finds a race of people. This is a very old series. Small books, and quite a few of them though I do not remember how many. Does anyone remember this series? I would love to find it again.

Audio and proof read texts of a lot of the Mars ones. It does start with him running, hiding in a cave and then just being there.

Sounds very much like John Carter of Mars, which had a couple dozen books.
