(Found) Looking for a sci fi novel I read in the 1980's. I think it was part of a trilogy.

The main character was a young woman who was some sort of cat burglar. She had injectors in her nails that could put someone to sleep if she scratched them. She, with a group of people, went to a place where there was a machine that could change peoples forms. The machine gave everyone tails (dogs I think) but gave her a cats tail and changed her nail injectors into biological versions. At the end of the book the machine changed her into a half donkey type thing and she was trapped (possibly in the machine).

I didn't read the next book and often wonder if she ever got out.

Mavra Chang was the half donkey, Exiles at the Well of Souls was the book. It looks like it was part of a large series, I'm off to Amazon to order them.
