Could someone please indicate Title or Author for the following (admittedly very vague description) of a book. It has a totally different take on the workings of Heaven & its angels with great characterization of the angels (& god?) indicating a much different story than the bible. Satan (very possibly named something else) was not the evil character as portrayed by the bible.
I remember the language as being modern (not stylized English).

Thanks in advance for any help

How about Mark Twain's The Screwtape Letters, or Terry Pratchett's Good Omens, or (less likely, given that it's a seven-book* series) Piers Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality series, specifically books six and seven, For Love of Evil and And Eternity?

There is also Robert Heinlein's Job: A Comedy of Justice, although it doesn't really get to the heaven/hell part until the end.

*Note to nobody in particular: I see it's been too long since I visited this series, since I just discovered an eighth book.

Oh geez, did I type that? Of course, that's what I meant!

I was combining Twain's Letters from the Earth and Lewis' The Screwtape Letters. Sorry for the brain cramp! Probably comes from having read them both about the same time and way too long ago!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions above so far.

To Reign in Hell by Steven Brust looks the most promising at the moment.

Don't worry, we've all been there. :) Just glad I hadn't missed something.
