That is one of my favorite Twain books. Life on the Mississippi comes first, following his life anecdotally from 1853-1861. Then Roughing It, covering 1861-1870 or thereabouts. Both interesting, but Roughing is more entertaining I thought.
He gives us a believe-it-or-not phenomenon that he claimed was true and not one of his many fabrications. One day in Virginia City, Nevada it had been cloudy and in the evening a hole opened in the clouds and a ray of sunlight struck the American flag on the hill. Many people there noticed it. He noted the date as July 3, 1863 making it about the same time that Pickett's Charge had failed and the South was soundly defeated at Gettysburg and Vicksburg on the Mississippi fell, both massive turning points in the war.

Last Christmas by F. Paul Wilson.

After reading 21 of the Repairman Jack novels this year, the timing couldn't have been better. I'll probably bread this once i finish my next book.
 
Just bought a hard back copy of Neal Asher’s Orbus From second hand shop near me. A bargain at only £3.50.

Dogs of War by Adrian Tchaikovsky. I thought this book was so great I wanted to add the hardback to my collection. I had to get it from the States.

Me too -- not even counting ones I've read but would like to reread. But I really have done it, I've really broken the book-buying habit at last. I have bought one book since November (a pre-order of a book due out in March).
 
After I watched this - Encore! - The Seine: The world's most romantic river, I looked up the author Elaine Sciolino and her books, just had to buy a couple of them:

The Only Street in Paris: Life on the Rue des Martyrs
La Seduction: How the French Play the Game of Life

The Seine will be the next. I really like the writing from the few pages of each book on amazon. And writers who have had serious journalist background often research relentlessly for their books, fiction or non-fiction. It is a habit die hard, and it makes the books more valuable, interesting and convincing.

The interview also mentioned her book about Iran - Persian Mirrors: The Elusive Face of Iran. Per amazon: "As a correspondent for Newsweek and The New York Times, Sciolino has had more experience covering revolutionary Iran than any other American reporter. She was aboard the airplane that took Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini to Tehran in 1979 and was there for the revolution, the hostage crisis, the Iran-Iraq war, the rise of President Khatami, the riots of 1999, and the crisis over Iran's nuclear program." On my to-buy list (or maybe not, must stop buying and do more reading).
 
I bought Neal Asher's Transformation series in Hardback. (Dark Intelligence, War Factory and Infinity Engine).
 
I downloaded a few books last night.

Ancillary Justice, Ancillary Sword, Ancillary Mercy and Provenance by Ann Leckie. These have been on my to read pile for a while and I made a commitment to reading more SF by female authors in 2020.

Shift and Dust to finish off Hugh Howey’s Wool trilogy. I see that there are now several prequel novels in the series. Anyone think they’re worth getting.
