Dennis Lester McKiernan

born Moberley, Missouri: 4 April 1932

Dennis L. McKiernan is an American writer of science fiction, epic fantasy, high fantasy, fairy tales, and mysteries (with paranormal and romance.)

McKiernan only began writing full-time in 1989 after early retirement from a career in engineering,

He is best known for his Mithgar series and Faery series. His short stories have been frequently anthologised, and his work has often been queried in our SFF Chronicles Book Search forum. His work often has themes of artificial intelligence, virtual reality and retold fairy tales.

The first book of the Mithgar series was originally written as a sequel to The Lord of the Rings but the estate of JRR Tolkien refused permission for publication. It was written while he recovered from a motorcycle accident in 1977. It was then substantially rewritten with plot and character changes, and a prequel to support it. Even so, many critics think it is too similar and a mere imitation.

A list of his works is to be found here: Summary Bibliography: Dennis L. McKiernan
