The plot reminded me of the film Replicas, except for the kid rebooting, and the film isn't based on a book, so this suggestion is pretty useless

There was another story... Our Hero is a kid growing up, with several playmates. As he grew, however, his playmates grew in jumps-- all of a sudden, their bodies were bigger, but their heads only grew occasionally. IIRC, this wasn't just a father's doing. Turns out our hero is (I think) human; his playmates were robots built to keep him company. Their heads were more complex to update, and so the heads were transplanted onto a larger body.
That's about all I remember about that story.
