Never thought that I owned my children.
Certainly not my grand-children.
However, there's that old thing about disowning so I can see where the confusion might arise.
Since I've never owned them; I certainly can't disown them: Can I.

I do know that when I was that age I was forced to write something from out of my imagination--that really fell flat.

At the time, I would never have thought I would some day write fiction.

Took me till I was 30 something before I tried.

My advice. Ask them what they think and respect what they say and don't push.
You can't hurry imagination.
