Another reader asked about this story at another forum. It's not "The Martian" by Bradbury. The other reader remembers this:

It was an old time story that I read in a science fiction collection. Perhaps the collection was Science Fiction of the Golden Age, but I'm not sure of that.

The topic was humans had travelled to Mars and found there Martians. But the Martians there appeared uniformly mad.

It turned out that the Martians could read human minds, and it drove them mad.

Possibly another Ray Bradbury short story from The Martian Chronicles

The Earth Men
Definitely sounds very much like a Bradbury story, but I can't remember much of that collection (and my Martian Chronicles is somewhere packed in a box in a garage...)

The Earth Men seems a likely candidate. I'll report back later.

... time passes ...

OK. Time for my report. Apparently the story's not found in Martian Chronicles. Regardless, The Earth Men will be re-read by me shortly.
