I read a book in the late 80's, sci-fi in nature. It's very vague in recollection but I remember enjoying it immensely hence the need to track it down.
as far as I can remember the main character was either part of or struggling against a brotherhood/secret regiment/guardians and there was a lot of travelling or communicating through the ether (or aether?).
The author may have had a French sounding name and the book may have been part of a trilogy, butbI'm not so sure on the last two points.
