Cannot remember a story Name/Author

Hi,

I remember reading a story time ago centered around a scientist trying to find a cure for mass hysteria or something. I remember there where towers mentioned in the story that kept him safe from the people outside the center he was in. This scientist was also dependant on some sort of drug if i remember correctly. He manages to find the cure and then the story has a twist, that in fact the scientist had been put to sleep and dreaming/living in an imaginary dream world to find the cure for a problem that could eventually really happen.

I would appreciate any insight on title/author.

:/ I went over all my books again for the upteenth time. It's annoying. I know I read it :(... at least I really hope so.
