David Allen Drake

born Dubuque, Iowa: 24 September 1945
died Silk Hope, North Carolina: 10 December 2023

David Drake was an American author of science fiction (military science fiction), fantasy and young adult fiction. He was a Vietnam War veteran, and a lawyer and small press publisher.

His first collection of short stories, From the Heart of Darkness (1983) is indicative of his wide variety of work.

He is best known for the Hammer's Slammers series and the RCN Series inspired by the Aubrey–Maturin novels of Patrick O'Brian.

Drake's plots often use history, literature, and mythology, as they do in his Lord of the Isles series, which has elements of Sumerian religion and medieval technology.

He has frequently collaborated with other authors, including Eric Flint, S M Stirling, Janet Morris and Tony Daniel.

A list of his works is to be found here: Summary Bibliography: David Drake

I ive read a few things by him

Hammers Slammers
The Dragone Lord
Ranks of Bronze
Lord of Isles
Killer
which he corwrte with Karl Edward Wagner and he wrote several excellent Dinochrome Brigade Bolo stories.

Superb writer !

I mainly read the Hammer's Slammers series, and wrote some books (with his permission) in that universe. Too bad he died though. But Hammer's Slammers got me into writing so I thank him for that.

He also wrote a few Bolo stories and those to were quite good.

He was one hell of good writer. He was pretty good at horror and Fantasy,
I read one of his horror stories, and don't remember (it was the monsters hunting atomic bombs), and his story adaptation of that Kuttner novel (which I'm foggy on) about the ships on Venus and such. It's been a long while though but I mainly stuck to Hammer's Slammers due to military service. I can't say he's a bad writer of course, but his other work I really didn't get much into, so I don't have much of an opinion on it.

The 1953 science scion film The Twonky was based of one of Henry Kuttner's stories and story as was 2007 film The Last Mimzy. was based on another one of his stories As far as I know, those are the only two film adaptation of his works.

And I thought I was a sci-fi aficionado... Never heard of those films, I didn't follow Kuttner that much, just left it at Clash by Night
