Boy meets girl, girl tells boy of her problems, boy solves problems in heroic fashion. That's the way it goes, now and forever, right?
Wrong!
How about the boy, a sorcerer's apprentice, gets waylaid and threatened by girl, then witnesses girl nearly assassinate the king? She then kidnaps boy in a last-minute ransom attempt which leads to trouble with her clan of thieves. And in a final act of desperation, the girl holds the boy captive in order to learn more of "The Three Roses" which the king is reportedly searching for.
That's just the first act. The second has a mad assassin seeking vengeance on the girl who had failed him. The backstory also features a religion very similar to Christianity (except that magic isn't considered evil, of course). Micah, the Son of Man, had returned after a thousand years with new teachings--ones that even his most devout followers don't care for.
If this sounds as interesting as it is ambitious, then please check out my fourth published fantasy novel, "The Legend of the Three Roses."
