Little is said about this but it's worth noting that the UK invaded Iceland on May 10th 1940, primarily to prevent the island falling into German hands and acting as a base to attack convoys. It became a base for both British and American operations. The Germans had actually carried out a feasibility study into taking the island (Fall Ikarus) and, although a successful invasion could be anticipated given that Iceland had no defence force, supply would be a major problem. The steamships Europa and Bremen were thought to have been considered for troop transportation (as they were for Operation Sealion).
