There is a three volume series called The Course of Fortune by Tony Rothman.
The story of the defense of Malta in 1565 when 2000 Knights Hospitaller and about 4000 civilians held off about 40,000 Turks of the Ottoman Empire for nearly 4 months.
The Ottomans finally gave up and left. The story is told through the eyes of a young Spanish mercenary starting many years before the battle.
I was not aware of this knock down drag out battle as a historical event, makes the Alamo look like small farming!
