The New Yorker on John Christopher's "Tripods" books

I remember reading these when I was about 10, and being frightened by the 1980s TV show. They were pretty good, I think: in particular, the vision of ruined Europe and the idea of the "capping" ceremony stick in my mind.

Really nice to see that.
At the same age as I read the Tripods I also read John Christpher's The Lotus Caves, a short and really haunting YA SF novel set on the moon. Empty World was another good one.

The ones I really wanted to read were the Sword of the Spirits trilogy, set in post-apocalyptic Winchester, more or less where I grew up. Unfortunately the local library did not have them.

I read the Tripods about 20 years ago and thought the trilogy quite good.
