Asimov’s Science Fiction has become the first of what are considered the “big three” science fiction magazines (the other two being The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction and Analog Science Fiction and Fact) to accept electronic submissions. The magazine will still not accept submissions through e-mail or on disk, but have installed a submissions system on their website. The new system is designed to let an author know within twenty-four hours that their submission has been received and gives authors a tracking number that will allow them to follow their manuscript’s status.

Paper submissions will still be accepted, according to the submission guidelines on the magazine’s website, although comments from Asimov’s Editor, Sheila Williams, seem to indicate a hope that authors will use the new submissions system.

In an interview at SFSignal.com, Ms. Williams said that she hopes the electronic submissions system will simplify the process of submission and acknowledgement for both authors and the magazine’s staff. It is unclear, however, whether response time will decrease, since she expects an increase in the number of submissions the magazine will receive. She also said she hopes that implementation of the electronic submissions system will make it easier for authors submitting stories from outside the United States, noting that postal delivery is not uniformly reliable throughout the world.

Ms. Williams, who has worked at Asimov’s since 1982, is nominated this year for a Hugo Award in the Best Editor, Short Form category. It is her fifth nomination. Two short stories and a novella that appeared in Asimov’s last year are also nominated for Hugo’s this year. In addition, Asimov’s is nominated for a Locus Award in this year’s Magazine category.
