War is Hell.

The Vegans attack, bursting through our lines blasting our troops apart – arms, heads and legs scattered randomly. I’m trapped below a heap of mutilated bodies. Slurping sounds as they feast on the corpses – gotta play dead!

I recognise pieces of Alex, Jim and Taffy covering me. The stench of decay rises making me want to vomit.

Voices! – Our infantry’s counterattacking! Vegan grunts are screaming now!

“This one’s alive! MEDIC!! You’re OK now, son!”

I cried.

Trapped

Day in, day out it's the same. I do my nice easy job. I smile at my kind and loving partner. I play with my smart and precious child. Every day the same. Every dream the same. Every moment same same same same same
I AM GOING MAD!!!
With one final flick of the wrist it's over. I walk out, $75 in hand to make my own life.
Nightmare no more.

Splash Down

Can a nightmare come with modest regularity in outer space?
This one certainly did.

He was on a strange ship where he couldn’t find the head.
People would point the way, but he would get lost,
or the door would be locked, or something...
His need was urgent.
He searched a place for some relief.
Maybe he could use that old bucket.
Surprisingly, it worked.

Awareness dawns, his bunk feels warm and moist. Oh no!

Dream Demon

I feed on emotion. Fear tastes the sweetest, though. It’s so easy to slip into the minds of sleeping humans. I manipulate their dreams to get exactly what I want, and very few can actually stop me.

A new meal every night, too. Fear of burning? Falling? Ghosts, or monsters?

Delicious!

The best hosts are the most creative, though: artists, writers, or anyone who possesses a highly developed imagination.

Now… Where should I feed tonight?

The Insertionist

The nurse says the man’s been this way for days: huddled, dreaming.

An hour's meditation, and I’m in.

He’s running, stumbling, exhausted.

‘I’m here to help.’ I jog alongside. ‘What pursues you?’

‘No,’ he gasps. ‘Ahead.’

I squint. A distant figure, walking away. Familiar.

Can it be …?

‘Dad?’

Run harder. Must catch up. Must tell him …

Can’t get nearer!

Days of running. Exhaustion. No closer.

Suddenly another man’s jogging alongside us.

‘I’m here to help.’

The Beast

Thrane knelt by the lake. Scooping water into his hand, he wet his parched mouth. The stars blazed against the black sky. Their image shimmered upon the surface of the lake. It was a cold night. Winter would be here soon, thought Thrane.

Hearing movement behind him, the young warrior whirled, his sword hissing into his hand. Thrane watched the beast shamble forward. Part man, part bear, it was ugly, lethal, a thing of nightmare.

A Change of Heart

“Imprison them; tomorrow have them trampled under horses’ hooves”

That night he dreamed. A vision of terror berating him for his cruelty, punishing him with a horse whip, he felt the pain of every lash, tried to wake but couldn’t.
Next morning he awoke his body covered in lash marks.

Before breakfast he gave an order,

“Those monks release them, they can have their Tax exemption, and give them money to build an abbey”

Another Night at The Office

"Boss wants you."

It was barely sunrise. She interrupted the download, and hurried to his office.

"Bonjour," he said. "Sit down."

She clasped her hands nervously.

"You've done well," he said. "Some of the best images I've ever seen; he's really suffering."

"Thank you."

"Can you keep it up?"

"Yes."

"Good."

He slid a badge to her. Tears filled her eyes as she picked it up. It was ornate, engraved: 'Knight Mare.' Promotion at last.

Dreams within Dreams

Everyone has their own nightmare. With her its spiders, so every night I fill her dream with them.

She will be dead soon, her heart or a stroke maybe. Abject terror followed by death.

Ah yes! Soon her soul will emerge and then her real torment can begin.

Look! Here they come: those hell hounds are never gentle.

Of course what you fear most is watching her die and seeing her dragged down to hell.

Closing Time

Billy sat in a dark corner at the end of the bar. "My life is a living hell, one endless nightmare", he said. Boris, the bartender walked over, "closing time". Billy was sobbing, "it's these burns, people won't talk to me, won't even look at me".
Boris looked him in the eye, " I have to tell you every night Billy, you died in a hotel fire a hundred years ago". "I gotta lock up".

Your reality check bounced

Naked in the city’s muffled throng
Pursued by menaces unrecognised .
Embarrasment o’erwhelmed by terror’s song
Pyjama’d perspiration soaking bed, king sized.
The ground gives way, all underpinnings break;
I plunge and, falling, I awake.
Tangled bedclothes, solitary room
Alone in overpopulated land
Fearing to leave my cold, paint-peeling womb
There’s starving weeping from the kids next door,
Shower staining skin, tap undrinkable
Titanic planet, ice unthinkable
Too late to make my hopeless stand.

They’re going to take my body away. I see them cover it with a sheet, lift it to the gurney and wheel it away.

I’m still here, dissociated from my body, but still conscious. My mind drenched with chilling horror.

This is a nightmare, but I can’t scream or wake. I am trapped, terrified, alone, disembodied in this basement.

Oh please no. They turned out the lights.

It’s so dark.

A Peaceful Alternative

The behemoth kicked in his sleep. Trees were levelled.

She gazed down on him from a nearby peak. All Her concentration was focused on
sending images into his unconsciousness: horrifiying dreams to haunt and frighten.

She knew it was the only way.
Left to sleep peacefully, he would awaken to rampage, destroying all in sight.
He shook himself awake, delicately raised up, then lumbered off to graze.

Exhausted, She crumpled to the ground and wept.

BEGINNING

I feel excited as my knowledge and self recede. I am becoming new! I leave the abstract, join the real. Seizing the chance while still myself, I look ahead with fading abilities at what this world, this upcoming life, has to offer...

Wait! Not this! I did not know it was like this...

Then I am gone, and can do nothing but issue a wordless anguished wail as I emerge from the womb.

Daybreak

My beautiful children frolicked before a panorama of green rolling hills, the bouquet of honeysuckle sweet in warm spring air. My one true love nestled in my arms on this most perfect of days.

I groaned when my torturers wrenched me back to reality. I lay on the slab shivering.

“Send me back,” I pleaded.

“Are you going to talk?”

I wept for my long dead family as I had done a hundred times before.

Philosopher, Be Damned

It is futile. I know that, and yet I struggle. Flailing my arms in vain against several tons of water, I succeed only in amusing my captors; they smirk through the glass front of the cube, looking at me helplessly submerged. Not concerned in the least, knowing the Elixir I drank will keep me alive.

As blessed unconsciousness approaches, I finally relax. Sweet release.

I wanted immortality. Instead, every day I wake to find perdition.

Wake Up

The scream arrives by stealth, but intensifies exponentially and wakes me. Disoriented and uncomfortable, I stop screaming.

But then....

The pain wakes me. Pulses of sharp suited agony, familiar administration. Shackled to a hard wooden chair in the dark. Dripping the smell of blood. Is it mine?

But then...

Awake, cables dancing, electrode adorned, senses wired.
In the wooden chair, behind the chair, behind the me behind the chair.
Am I awake yet?

But then...

MOBY JANE

She'd seen this before, but she'd always woken up. This time it was different.

The duvet boiled in blue waves across the bed, creases foaming white, and over
them came a cushion, propelled by a line of grim-faced bears at the sweeps.

"This is a dream!" she screamed.

"Here's to your dream!" said Timmy. And the fat penguin hit the beat with all
his heart.

Don’t Read This.

Listen to me!!!

I’ve been ensnared by a spell. Broken down into black and white: writing on a page.

You sit there calmly reading these words – but they are me!

I’m trapped in here!

Everything is closing in. Crushed by a typeface of oppressive black.

Claustrophobic literal imprisonment tantamount to character assassination.

Arcane digital inscription.

Every time someone reads these words the spell is reinforced.

For the love of....

STOP READING!!!

Please, stop reading.

The Chimeran Contract

Lying back down I called them to me.

“I know my rights and I want to see that accord.”

“How do you know about the accord?”

“That’s not important, my right to see it is.”

“You know they will be punished for the breach.”

“Cool, now where’s that paperwork.”

They could not deny me.

“You know the clause. I was safe upon waking.”

“And your compensation?”

“Compensation?”

Laughter chilled the bed around me.
