journeis thru (a)ether, possible Trilogy?

Hi, I read a SCI-FI book in the late 80's, I believe the author may have sounded French. It may have been part of a trilogy. In the story I think the main character either travels through or communicates through the ether (or aether?)
Sorry to be so vague but all I can remember is that I missed quite a bit of sleep due to reading this book!
