Hax and Roland

Was anyone else suprised when Roland called Hax's name as he approached the Tower? He (Hax) was a traitor and murderer and hung for his crimes but Roland sems to have felt something for the cook. Anyone have any ideas?

New guy here too. Seems to me that Roland had feelings for Hax since he used to secretly feed the boys when Cort would send them away with no food. However, he had to put his personal feelings aside since he knew that Hax was a traitor. Makes sense that Roland would call his name. It almost seemed to me that he was apologizing to all those people as he ran to the tower. Like making final amends with everyone he let go because of the tower.
