I am looking for a book from back in the 1970's. The main character goes to a planet where he ends up trapped in a cave by marauders. 999 out of 1000 people who go into the caves die. A creature drops on his head which enters into a symbiotic relationship with him. This makes the main character immortal and he goes through many careers trying to understand why he is immortal and he tries to come to terms with his immortality. Just when all hope seems lost an alien intellect attacks the human race with some kind of telepathic madness. The main character's unusual abilities and training make him capable of defeating the enemy and he now knows his purpose.
I described the book to my kids a couple of weeks ago and now they want to read it but I cannot find the title or author and the book is no longer in the archives.
