The Winds of Winter publishing date guesses?

This is just my hunch, but I think Feast and Dance will be merged and be shown as 3 seasons.

As much ad David and DB say they won't put the show on haitus, I think they would be open to stretching it out a little bit. Besides, this way they can go more in-depth into character development, which will please the fans of the books. They also skipped through alot of back story in season 1, so they might be able to revist alot of that later which will eat up air time, much the same way that they are only introducing Blackfish in season 3 when he was supposed to come into it in season 1.

I bet they'll actually diverge from the "this book is these seasons" paradigm once we get to AFFC and ADWD because they happen roughly across the same time frame. It's more likely that they will "mish-mash" the two books together into 3-4 seasons so that the story can be told more chronologically instead of telling one set of story arcs and then time travelling back to tell the others. People tend to forget about and lose interest in characters/stories that they don't see for a while: "out of sight, out of mind." Also, it would make contracting the actors that much more complicated to tell them "We don't need you for the next few years, but don't get too involved in anything else because we're gonna need you once we start filming three seasons from now."

Edit: Haha, beat me to it by 5 minutes! I took too long polishing my little SITREP.

Interesting.

Allegedly, at San Diego Comic-Con Bantam reps were saying that they have a release window for THE WINDS OF WINTER extending from late 2014 to mid-2015. However, GRRM's agents recently communicated with their international publishers and reportedly said that they don't think the book will be out until 2016.

Lots of crystal ball-gazing at the moment, though presumably GRRM's agents would know better than Bantam (who, we must remember, were preparing cover art for ADWD in 2008 in hope of the book's imminent release). Hopefully 2016 was lowballing it and late 2015 is still possible.

Well, we can always hope that the publisher has the correct dates, I suppose. ;)

They don't, or rather they will get the news before we do, but maybe by a fortnight tops. At this stage, the issue is more than GRRM himself does not know when he'll finish and, without recent updates, we can't make any substantial guesses ourselves.

2014 just feels too soon based on the fact he was still only 25% of the way through the book in April. Beyond that, we don't know.

I wish 2014 but probably 2016. If it is they will have to postpone the show because they will catch him. The show is actually turning into a double edged sword for the readers at this point. All of the conventions are dragging GRRM away from writing so that he can promote the show and meet all the fans of the show.

The bigger the show gets, the less time he has to write Winds of Winter. At the same time, we watch the show because its great. By far my favorite show on television.

This will never happen. The TV show will overtake him and, if necessary, show the ending on screen years before he reaches it in the books. There have been meetings between the producers and GRRM and outlines and things handed over to facilitate this if it proves necessary (and right now it's looking very, very likely).

The TV show cannot be postponed because it would be impossible to remount the project afterwards. The actors would scatter to other and new projects, it'd be too expensive to put them all on retainer and the sets and so on would have to be struck. TV production is a juggernaut and once it start it has to keep going. Kill the momentum and you kill the series. For a much smaller-scaled series under unusual circumstances (like Spartacus) yes, maybe you can do it, but not for a project of this size and scale.

I thought those outlines were mostly to finish it in case GRRM passes away? Though, I guess that doesn't preclude their use in other cases.

We'll have second half of ASoS done in the show next year, right? Then there are effectively three more books (in word count volume) to go through with an increasing number of viewpoint characters and increasing complexity. It would surprise me if they got all of that down in three seasons, though it's not impossible. And we don't even know yet how complicated/tough Winds of Winter is going to be. For all we know it'll take six seasons to get through those four books. By that time you're in 2020 and you'd be lucky if the show hadn't been cancelled yet.

Spartacus is the same approximate scale as Game of Thrones and it wasn't postponed anyway. (Not disagreeing with your point, merely correcting a factual detail :)).

The only viable option as a "delay" on the TV series would be to shoot it all and then delay broadcast. I can't see them having a break in the show. The sets and other elements wouldn't be an issue at all, as they can simply be put in storage, or if necessary rebuilt from scratch, but the cast are a major issue, and particularly the children in lead roles (as it is the show has had to do a lot of recasting and rewriting of roles because in the books there's lots of characters who are introduced as bit parts but become important later).

GoT is a lot more expensive and lot bigger production than Spartacus ever was. Spartacus certainly never filmed a single season in five separate countries ;)

Spartacus also had a delay between the first two seasons due to Andy Whitfield's illness. They filled in with a prequel mini-series, but the show itself was put on hold.

The show is also going to be eight seasons total according to the producers, which means that after two seasons for ASoS (though we know that some AFFC and possibly ADWD storylines are going to start in Season 4) they're going to need to do effectively one season per book, and if possible condense AFFC/ADWD into one season (which gives one 1.5 seasons per book for the last two books). What this likely means is the show will cease to be so faithful to the books going forwards after Season 4.

Yeah but most, if not all, of the main actors of spartacus season 1 stayed on for the prequel and got a sort-of origins story, then the main character from the prequel has been a regular for the rest of the series, so it doesn't really count as a break because they were still filming with almost their entire original cast.

What's Spartacus got to do with A Game of Thrones?

Someone was making the argument that a show can survive a one year filming break (so that GoT doesn't catch up with/over shoot aSoIaF). The argument stated if Spartacus can do it, so can GoT. But spartacus never really took a break.

I take the point, but interestingly it was GRRM himself who used Spartacus as a model of how they could proceed to give him an extra year. That was shot down pretty quickly by the GoT producers though.
