I subscribed to ANALOG magazine since the mid- 80's. Along about the mid nineties this online bit about online discussion groups began to gain traction among advanced computer nerds. ANALOG and Asimov's magazine had the same publisher, which outfit launched a lively pair of discussion groups. Well, ANALOG led to Asimov's and Gardner, long time editor of Asimov's, was an active participant in Asimov's online forum.

Gardner was a remarkably affable presence; a core anchor to a treasured community. Authors recently published, or hoping to be published dropped by regularly. Gardner was a bit of a rapscallion. He had stories about 50 years of Cons, and Authors and plenty of crazy antics and practical jokes. Way back before Trolls became a thing, there were no rules. Nobody posted anything too outrageous; but we got away with things and Gardner was as shameless as the rest of us.

I subscribed to Asimov's and bought all of the "Best of the Year..." series and many other collections and stories by Dozois. i guess I loved his voice, in fiction and in person.

Ah, well, the Mags got sold. Gardner retired. The forae collapsed, cataclysmically. A great loss.
