Clifford Beal

Clifford Beal is an American author of history non-fiction, historical fiction, horror, suspense, and fantasy. He writes novels, short stories and essays. He was a journalist and the editor of Jane’s Defence Weekly and is now a freelance consultant of defence and security matters.
Beal's first published book, Quelch’s Gold is non-SFF and concerns the life of John Quelch, a privateer who faced trial for piracy in Boston in 1704.
He is probably best known for his two series of historical fiction: The Sir Richard Treadwell series, consisting of Gideon's Angel (2013) and The Raven's Banquet (2014); and his The Swords of the White Rose series (writing as Ethan Bale), consisting of Hawker and the King's Jewel (2022), Hawker and the Lost Prince (2023) and The Knight's Redemption (2024).
His SFF fiction works include the Tales of Valdur series, The Guns of Ivrea (2016) and The Witch of Torinia (2017); the standalone novels, Gideon's Angel (2013) and The Raven's Banquet (2014); and the short fiction, Cast Iron (2014) and War Is Grimm (2017).
