Dan Simmons
born Peoria, Illinois: 4 April 1948
Dan Simmons is an American author of science fiction, horror, and fantasy, in short stories and novels, often all three genres within a single novel. He was also a school teacher.
His first published SFF short story was The River Styx Runs Upstream (1982) in The Twilight Zone Magazine. For many years he was known only as an author of tales of horror.
His first published SFF novel, Song of Kali (1985), is set in modern day Calcutta and concerns the release of an ancient evil. His second novel, Carrion Comfort (1989), serialised in Omni magazine was also a horror concerning mutant humans.
He is best known for the novels in his Hyperion Cantos series, beginning with Hyperion (1989), which deal with a space war; for the Seasons of Horror series, beginning with Summer of Night (1991); and for The Hollow Man (1992), a novel influenced by Dante.
Other works of note are The Terror (2007) which is both a horror and a historical fiction.
