Well, she's just killed and dried the flesh of the young horse's mother, so she has a plentiful supply of meat. The colt/filly is still not independent. and the woman is lonely, having recently left her clan and struck out on her own.

This sounds very much like "Clan of the Cave Bear." If it's not someone was appropriating an idea that someone else had.

In relation to horses - wild horses - I can't imagine that they were that easy to catch.

Far easier to pen them in, and let them breed. Domestication starts to develop, especially when you realise that you can ride a horse, and it can also help with manual labour.
