A little bit of movie advice please?

A great question. Western's aren't really something a watch often but it's a very enjoyable genre.

Support Your Local Sheriff? (always a favourite of mine growing up)
Red Sun
No Name on the Bullet.

Mel Gibson's 'Maverick' is fairly lighthearted, and a movie I enjoyed watching.

It's quite dificult to think of many Westerns that aren't extremely violent. Although Butch Cassidy is another lighthearted movie containing bank roberries, train robberies and a rather one-sided shootout. I think that's the one I would recommend most.

i assume that he's seen BTTF 3?

'BTTF 3'?

Yeah High Noon is fantastic.
Also the original Gunfight at the OK Corral, which benefits from some of the best theme music.

Or some country music. Ring of Fire, Walk the Line, Ghostriders in the Sky etc are great tracks. And the Phoenix movie 'Walk the Line' was superb.

Good point. Not sure he ever has. If he did it was a long time ago.

Well you've got 3 fantastic movies right there, and a fairly good Western.

"What's your name, dude?"

"Err, Mar.. Eastwood... Clint Eastwood." *Expects Biff to be suitably impressed*

"What kind of stoopid name is that!?"

I realized I loved Westerns and it was my favorite genre (beyond sci-fi, of course) was when I started listing the exceptions to "I hate Westerns except..."

Unforgiven is that rare deconstruction that works and you don't even need to admit your love of Westerns, simply action movies with aging protagonits.
Shane - Although if you read the book it ruins 99% of and "badass" fiction.
And the third, as others have mention, Once Upon A time in the West, or the Searchers

Gene Hackman was superb in The Unforgiven.

Liberty Valance is wonderful, no doubt; love it.

I find The Searchers to be nearly perfect. Here is a film critic's note: The Searchers is a darkly profound study of obsession, racism, and heroic solitude.

It's an epic film.

ps - The Searchers also has one of my favorite final scenes in a movie. :)
Oh yes...that ending!

Would also go for the Leone films except they are violent.

So best off going with the 50s classics.

Are Leone's movies really violent though? Yes, there are gunfights, but little that's explicit (by today's standards) and hardly any blood and guts.

Probably worth Jm previewing the movies first, but 'the man with no name' trilogy, with Eastwood poncho'd up, Lee Van Cleef as the classic villain, and of course Ennio Morricone's epic music are the epitome of the Western movie.

The Big Country
High Noon
The Oxbow Incident
The Magnificent Seven
The Shootist
True Greit. both the 1969 film and the 2010 remake
Rooster Cogburn
The Sons of Katie Elder
Silverado
Hang em High
The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw
The Wild Bunch
Paint Your Wagon
Winchester 73
Flaming Star
Last Train Out of Gun Hill
Buck and The Preacher

It's funny how differently my kids respond to screen violence. Both my daughters are much much more tolerant of it than he is - Gothy Daughter Number One loves gory 1980s Italian horror movies (but was terrified by Eraserhead); Hippy, laid back, Daughter Number Two had the biggest sh*t-eating grin on her face after watching Mad Max 2 for the first time and thought Salute of the Jugger (which is basically Rutger Hauer and Joan Chen beating the sh*t out of people for 90 minutes) was great. But Gamer Boy Son? - get freaked out by the oddest things.

'BTTF 3'?
Would also recccomed The Marvick tv series with James Garner , Jack Keel and later on Rodger Moore , its fun and in place hilariously funny

Also The Wild Wild West tv series , Its a steam punk science fiction western with a little bit of James Bond thrown in .

Jack Kelly. The original Maverick series is a hoot. It also gives you an idea of how wide the "west" was at that time, since the Maverick brothers were always on the move.

And if you only ever watch one episode, Shady Deal at Sunny Acres is not to be missed.

Speaking of tv westerns, my husband is currently working his way through the many seasons of Gunsmoke ( which, weirdly, he alternates with Murdoch Mysteries and Midsomer Murders).
