There are expectations that not only would noise and wildlife endangering properties be much reduced, they'd be easier to maintain and cheaper to build as don't need the massive foundations of the current propeller turbines, fewer gears, and in the main the bits that need maintenance are not a long way above ground in a nacelle.
 
There are quite a few different designs for the helical or 360 degree wind turbines, which range from a simple set of short vertical bars to new designs like the O-wind turbine where the blades funnel the wind and can generate power in crosswinds.
