Looking: water, alien, bounty hunter?

I started a novel years ago at an old friends house that I desperately want to find again! Let’s see what I remember: seemed like an 80s novel, maybe 300 pages, and the narration was 3rd person omniscient; I remember two main characters (so far), one woman and the other an alien man, where he wasn’t supposed to be where he was but she was protecting him. Something about water too, he was a water creature maybe, and was being hunted? Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
