Roman empire (Recommendations)?

How about the sixth century secretly written libellous account of Emperor Justinian and Empress Theodora by his court historian Procopius? It contains all the bottled up resentment and envy of a deeply frustrated employee. Some of the allegations are so lurid they probably qualify as fiction.

The Emperor series by Conn Iggulden is an entertaining read. Glorifies the leader as for Conn's Ghenghis Khan books, but very readable.
