Sally In Our Alley​

Collected in Gentleman Junkie.

The narrator, Snivack, is a janitor for an apartment building overrun with beatniks and other social outcasts. When a resident named Sally is found brutally murdered in the alleyway, the police recruit Snivack to investigate. The story follows his incompetent efforts to find clues, and uncover the motive behind Sally’s murder.

Originally published in the December, 1959 issue of Knave magazine.

Well, not really. I have read "Sally In Our Alley" and it's straight crime fiction, with no speculative content. Certainly no computer.

That's the only story with a "Janitor". @Dave Vicks - have you mixed up two stories, or is it not a Harlan Ellison story?

(I searched that database for "Janitor", "Computer" and "Basement" and nothing is likely to match the exact description.)
