The Legend of Farmer Brown's Dog

Farmer Brown knew Rusty was a smart dog. He always responded readily to commands.

However, whenever Rusty began responding to commands before they were spoken aloud, he knew Rusty was special. Soon Rusty took over many of Farmer Brown's responsibilities. When Farmer Brown spent a month in the hospital, Rusty efficiently managed the farm.

Now Rusty is very patient with Farmer Brown, who doesn't always respond to his commands in a timely manner.

It's Our Tern

“…and leviathans, deep in the ocean, passing under our islands like day-long shadows.”

“But, Grandmother Gull, how could you see them?”

“They could still see some ocean surface then, Little Fledgling.”

“Are they still there?”

“Gone, all gone. Like the Creators, once so powerful, gone.” From her soft Styrofoam nest, she pushed at a flapping bag, tucking it neatly under a bottle. The web of plastic beneath her undulated softly. “All gone. All ours.”

...the furless ape is making a honking great boat!

Pull my horn, it’s got bells on.

Then he says it's going to rain like, forever!

And I suppose he wants all of us animals on-board?

Well, two of each, you know.

You do realise that the apes have to eat, and they like meat?

Well, I don’t care. I'm going.

You giraffes may fall for his lies, but we unicorns aren’t that stupid.

How Hummingbird Saved Spring

Hummingbird flew along, following Spring as it unrolled across the land.

A snowflake hit her, then another; she realized with horror that Winter was still here.

Spring was stuck, as Winter threw ice and cold at it, fighting to remain.

Faster than any eye could see, Hummingbird zipped around, jabbing holes in Winter, deflating it.

Then she picked up a corner of Spring in her beak, and pulled it north with her as she flew.

Boiled Down

“What about Bimini? Two dolphins taught—“

“Yes, Dad. Took you to Atlantis.” Steph wheeled him into the bay window. “I’ve heard them all fifty times.”

“I thought you liked them.”

A great life all boiled down to lies. It wasn’t fair. “One of us has to be realistic.”

Whitewashed walls and clouded-grey past dripped into hollow cheeks.

She swallowed. “You ever meet any pandas?”

A glimmer in his eyes. “Ha. Boy do they cheat!”

How the Squirrels “Lost” Their Nuts

A long time – more than a year – ago, the grey squirrels decided, all on their own, that they’d take drastic action to save the red squirrels.
They saw their chance when their paths crossed with a biochemist who just happened to work for a company specialising in genetic engineering. They begged him to provide a solution.
Soon afterwards, their wishes were granted: no more would they be pestered by those nuisances, baby grey squirrels.

The Cat in the Rye

The way cats stare at you really gets me. Like they know what you ate for breakfast, really gives me the creeps. No kidding. But this cat just floored me. It really did. I thought about going over and giving it a stroke and all, but right that second it turned it’s head and stuck it’s tongue out at me. No kidding. It’s tongue was right out. You shoulda seen it. It really killed me.
