I'm looking for this Lovecraft short story.

There was a Mine in the Australian outback that the adventures went down into.

The ran across some object that they felt "It screams with age."

There was a Portal to a world with cone shaped creature in a vast library.

If you know this story, I'd love to get the title.

That sounds like The Shadow out of Time to me.

Excellent! I just read the first page, seems like it. I'm going to try reading it out loud to my 12 year old boy and see how it goes.
