Are those quotes correctly placed? It seems wrong, but "...'that's just life?'" isn't correct either, I think.

The example you've got is slightly ambiguous, but assuming the question is "Nothing about...?" then you're right -- the question mark comes between the two sets of quote marks; if it were the "that's just life?" then the quote comes immediately after the "life" with no intervening mark.

How you can work it out is invert your sentence eg "Nothing about 'That's just life' and honour and duty?" he asked.
