This author wrote one of the true epics in science fiction about a desert planet fought over by members of a galactic monarchy. At the end of the book an off-world, Moses-like prophet freed the indigenous people from their oppressors. What did the people of the desert planet call their messiah?

Are you doing a pub quiz again? :)

If so, the book is Dune by Frank Herbert and the answer is Muad'Dib - the messianic name for Paul Atriedes. However, your quizmaster might have the name down as Paul Muad'Dib. :)

Thanks, and I'm actually taking an "impossible" Sci Fi quiz, we're allowed to use any references to find the answers to each question.

The Fremen also called him 'Mahdi', meaning the Prophet who will lead us to Freedom.
His 'secret name' amongst them was Usul

It seems like a quiz question set by a non genre reader who thinks sci fi is obscure :)

Mmmm - according to which source you use, Dune has sold about 20 million copies - about the same as Pride and Prejudice and more than The Grapes of Wrath and The Old Man and the Sea...

Wouldn't be easier just to give us all the questions together in a single thread?

Of course, as this is the largest science fiction forum, and is searchable, all the other "impossible" quiz entrants will have access to the answers given. Which means that you quiz master will be quite surprised when everyone comes in with 100%.
