In 1987, I got to see an exhibition of Tolkien's Hobbit art at Marquette University in Milwaukee. It was particularly thrilling to behold the alpine landscape of "Bilbo Woke Up with the Early Morning Sun in His Eyes." I was intrigued by a sketch that wasn't used in the published book, showing a hill under a brooding sky, with red ink for the trolls' distant fire.
