Veteran multiplayer gamers will probably remember Tribes from an age past.

It was out in the late nineties when Quake still ruled the online deathmatching roost, although Tribes offered a very different experience to straight up deathmatch.

Tribes was all about team-based objective play in a sci-fi setting which introduced flying vehicles, and players with jetpacks.

And now the game is set to return in Tribes: Ascend, remade with modern visuals, but still looking like very much the same game from 1998 at heart. Have a peek at the trailer which has just been revealed on YouTube.

More good news for fans, this reboot is going to be free-to-play when it emerges later this year (unfortunately the release date hasn’t been pinned down beyond this vague guess-timate).

It will be monetised by the usual F2P method, micro-transactions, in other words an in-game shop where you can buy access to different weapon load-outs. Whether or not these purchased customisation options will unbalance the game at all, we shall have to see.

Tribes: Ascend is being put together by Hi-Rez Studios, the outfit that developed another F2P sci-fi MMOG, Global Agenda (although initially, this wasn’t free-to-play, but was switched to that model a couple of months back).

Global Agenda had its issues, but was an interesting effort, and the new Tribes certainly looks promising. The price is definitely right, so we can see many nostalgic gamers taking this one for a spin when it hits the market.
