League of Legends is about to expand its remit with a new mode of play.

League of Legends: Dominion is based on an entirely new map, the Crystal Scar, and revolves around capturing objectives. There’ll be five objectives to grab, which will accumulate points as you hold them.

Obviously this will create a very different dynamic to the standard game, where the focus is purely on storming the opponent’s base. In Dominion, there’ll be a much deeper layer of tactics as to which points to hold and defend.

Advanced strategies such as faking attacks on an objective will also be incorporated by clever teams.

The idea, in general, is to make a faster paced, shorter game where folks will die more often, not to mention level quicker. The average game time is looking at the fifteen to twenty minute mark.

The developer Riot Games also notes that comebacks are more likely to happen than in the standard version. Again, with the original scenario, once you’d begun to lose, you pretty much knew where the bout was headed. Not necessarily as much with Dominion, though.

Marc Merrill, Executive Producer of League of Legends, commented: “We asked our millions of players around the world to expect the unexpected in 2011 – and with League of Legends: Dominion, we’re making good on that promise.”

“Dominion brings something completely original to the MOBA genre, taking the proven fun of League of Legends’ team-based competition with a diverse roster of champions, and unleashing them on a new battlefield with entirely new rules.”

As with the classic version of League, Dominion will be free-to-play, and players will be able to use all their existing champions and suchlike with the new map.

Dominion will be shown off in playable form at Gamescom in Cologne later this month, with the full release coming shortly after, so presumably some time in September.

Riot Games will want to keep League of Legends fresh, given that Valve has Dota 2 coming out at the end of this year (and Dota 2 will also be at Gamescom, with a higher profile tournament featuring a $1 million prize).
