You might be right, Jonathan! I can't find any direct quotes by GRRM saying that he took the GoT from the GoH... yet look at the similarities. Also, GRRM does pay homage to Jordan in certain things, such as "House Jordayne of the Tor" (The lord is called "Trebor" which is "Robert" backwards and "Tor" is Jordan's publisher). http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/House_Jordayne

Yes, Lord Trebor and House Jordayne are direct homages, but that was more to the author than the work. I think there are a few other authors who get little references like that. He read a bit of the WoT, but only after a fan (or fans) gave him the books to read after ASOIAF was published, and he stopped reading them after a book or two (on the grounds of it being bad form to be reading one epic fantasy while writing another- can lead to accusations of plagiarism etc., or Jordan actually starting to influence his work in unintended ways). So GRR Martin won't be reading them until at least A Dream of Spring is over.

Leisha -- yeah, it's the bidding I hate. I don't like to wait for two days just to get beaten at the last second. Plus the price could go all over the place in bidding. And I'm just generally too impatient. With the irony being that I may now have a month and a half to wait... but I have a feeling it'll be quicker than that, things usually are.

It's funny. Now that I am done the series, which I read books 4-14 in the past year, I kind of want to go back and reread the first book just to see the differences. I read Eye of the World about 14 years ago and again about 4-5 years ago. Since then I have devoured a lot of books and a book changes every time you read it, especially since we, as people, change with time.

The bad thing is, because of my WOT obsession over the past year, I am way behind on a lot of other books I want to read. The top of my TBR pile , Blood of Dragons by Hobb, which I am halfway done already, The Daylight War by Brett and Blackviel by Kristin Britain. I also have about 6 other misc books I have in a pile that I have been waiting for.

Maybe I will wait for a few months, get caught up and do a reread of the first book just for fun.

Yeah, I heard Martin say that he's a gardener type of author, so I can imagine how he's influenced without intending to be if he's not careful. It would be interesting to see what he says if he ever does read them!

The secret to winning eBay auctions, as much as people hate you doing it (yet it's the only way if others do it to you), is to think of your top bidding price and add 50p - 75p more (you do this in the last 10 seconds, after refreshing loads beforehand to keep an eye on the price). Ratsy - I've often thought about rereading book one now that I'm so cosy with everyone and everything - it'd be fun to see how they all started out and how innocent everything was - but I figure I need to finish the series first.

I'm gonna have to go back and read the prologue at some point. I just know I missed loads of vital clues there since I generally don't take in much from prologues that seem to be set so far back. But yeah, to see a POV from the man himself, the legend...
