against a dark background

I once had a drunken conversation with Banks at a con in which we tried to conflate the first line of The Crow Road ("It was the day my grandmother exploded.") with the first line of John Varley's The Golden Globe ("In 100 years, the penis will be obsolete.").

I think we ended up with, "In 100 years, my grandmother's penis will explode."

I didn't like "Against a Dark Background" at all when I read it a long time ago. Although it was the first of his SF novels that I read. I should probably re-read it but then I just don't care for his work enough generally to revisit it. Besides, the next time I'm in a Banks mood, I've got "Consider Phlebas" lined up to read.
