Now don't freak out - I am not suggesting that this idea is in production or anything!
I was trawling through the Aint it Cool message boards and I cam across an argument over whether this would work, what the subject matter would be and whether you would watch.
There is much speculation over whether Lucas had ever even conceived of Episodes 7, 8 and 9, but it seems unlikely to me that after Episode Three is done and dusted the franchise will go back to the books and video games series that it was between Jedi and The Phantom Menace. Lucas has gone on the record to say that he will not be making any more films, but perhaps this might imply that he would be content to have more films made, even if his name wasn't on the director's chair.
The franchise could go in a different direction - TV. Buffy The Vampire Slayer is one example of a successful leap from the big to little screen.
Of course the Star Wars series is very different, but would you watch if they did this? What format do you think it would follow? What stories could it tell?
I think it could be successful if it followed a different set of characters from those we are already familiar with. I have not read any of the books, but I gather that their storylines spread out tangentially from the Lucas's original conception - surely more than enough material for another story to be told on-screen.
What do you think?
