Early next morning, Lenera and Rewana had reached the boarders of the Edgelands. The red sun was ambling through the misty sky and it shone on the morning dew.
“I can’t go any father, Rewana.†Lenera said.
“I know, I can go on my own from here.†Rewana replied. “Will you wait here for me?â€
“Of course I will.†Lenera smiled. Rewana smiled back, and began to climb the barrier. Flying for such a long time had worn her out so all she could do was walk.
“Hey!†Rewana spun round, nearly slipping on the loose rocks. Tular stared back at her from on top of a large boulder below. “You going back in there on your own?†He asked in disbelief.
“Yes, I have to.†Rewana said.
“No you’re not!†Tular shouted back.
“Yes I am and you can’t stop me!†Rewana cried.
“Stop you? I’m coming with you! You can’t just go waltzing back in there alone!â€
“But…but they’ll kill you!†Rewana replied, disbelieving of what she was hearing. Tular laughed.
“Just let them try!†He said confidently as he swooped up to the top of the barrier. Confused as of what to do, Rewana looked to her mother for help. Lenera just smiled and nodded towards Tular. Sighing, Rewana climbed to the top, alongside Tular. She whispered in his ear.
“You don’t seriously think you can outrun fully grown dragons do you? You may be too fast for me but...â€
“Ah but you forget!†Tular interrupted. “I was never banished was I? I’m innocent!†Rewana opened her mouth to speak but all that came out was a joyful laugh.
“Come on then, we have to hurry!†She said. Lenera watched as the small blue and purple figures stepped over the border into the Islands and sighed sadly.
Finding the scent of old territory spinning on the breeze made Rewana feel refreshed, but also a deep longing to stay. She didn’t know here Tophax was, but she made for the great forest, Tular beside her. Tular was amazed. He has never seen such scenery in his life. He wasn’t watching where he was going when he felt a paw stop him.
“Listen…†Rewana whispered, listening hard.
“I don’t hear anything,†Tular replied, cocking his head to the side. His blue eyes scanned the surroundings, but he could not see anything either.
“There it was again! Can’t you hear it?†Tular could not hear anything but birdsong and the rustling of leaves, but Rewana, involuntarily using her Earth Dragon power, had an acute sense of hearing much better then Tular’s. The sun reflected in her eyes brightly, making them seem as if they were on fire, a splendid mix of red and fiery orange. She listened hard, and heard a faint weeping coming from the forest ahead of her.
Something compelled her to run towards the noise, even though she didn’t know what it was. She darted through the moss-covered trees with the blue dragonling close behind. Twigs snapped beneath her as she dashed under a canopy of dense greens and browns. She ran always towards the sound until she came to a sudden stop. Ahead of her Nefora was crying, huddled over…over…Tophax.
“Father!†Rewana cried. Nefora jumped up, but relaxed when she saw who it was.
“Rewana…you…you’re alive!†She whimpered.
“What…what happened? Father?†Rewana said as she crept close to Tophax. His breathing was heavy and laboured and his body was shaking. He opened his bleary eyes and Rewana began to cry.
“Tokeni…†Nefora whispered. “He…hurt him.â€
“Rewana!†Tophax whispered hoarsely. “You came back! Oh Rewana I’ve been so…worried…†He trailed off. His eyes filled with glistening tears as Rewana lay down beside him. Tophax was dying; his broken ribs had pierced his internal organs and he was slowly bleeding from the inside. Rewana fought back tears as she cuddled up close to her father.
“Father I’m so sorry…†she sobbed.
“No. I’m sorry Rewana, I hurt you…†Tophax replied shakily.
“Father…†Rewana cried, tears sliding down her cheeks.
“I love you Rewana…be strong…my Rewana…†Tophax ended. A light in his green eyes slowly dulled. He stopped breathing, his pain ended. He closed his eyes for the last time. Tophax had died.
“Father!†Rewana wailed. “Please! Come back! Come back! Don’t die please! I need you…Father…come back…†A wave of tears cascaded down her face as she shook Tophax in vain to wake him. Tophax lay still, his cold green body no longer under Tokeni’s torment. Rewana’s small purple figure huddled close to her father’s, the shock sinking in. She wailed and sobbed and howled until there were no tears left inside her. Nefora comforted her, crying herself, as the real truth began to sink in. Tophax was gone. He wasn’t coming back. Ever. Tular watched from a distance, finding tears pricking his own eyes. He whimpered softly as Rewana cried out loud.
“I love you Father…goodbye…†Rewana bit back a sob. Tophax had told her to be strong. She swallowed hard, shaking the tears from her orange eyes. She backed away from Tophax’s lifeless body and whispered a last goodbye. She turned and fled, ignoring Nefora pleading for her to come back. Tular followed closely, not wanting to lose her. At last Nefora’s cries were silent and Rewana flopped down on a patch of ferns, hiding her wet face with her paws.
“Rewana…I…I’m so sorry…†Tular whispered softly.
“I should have stayed here…I could have saved him!†Rewana wailed miserably.
“You couldn’t have known…â€
“I could have saved him!†Rewana repeated, anger welling up inside her.
“How?†Tular asked, confused. Rewana suddenly realized she had started to let slip her secret. Tular stared at her, trying to understand what she meant.
“I…we…he…†Rewana stuttered, then turned away to hide her face. Tular walked round her with his head down.
“Rewana…†Tular began
“No, I can’t tell you, I’m sorry!†Rewana cried weakly before running off, generally back to the Edgelands. Tears flew from her eyes as she ran. Tular wasn’t giving up; he followed her swiftly, calling her name. She quickened her pace; she wanted to get away. The torment inside of her bit at her heart, deep sorrow and mourning aching within.
“Rewana you can’t keep running away!†Tular called after her. Rewana stumbled forward, and lay still, Tular’s words echoing in her head. Breathing fast, but laying still, she waited for familiar pawsteps to pad beside her.
“Rew…what? Please tell me.†The purple dragonling stared at her paws, sobbing quietly. Tular lay down beside her, his body’s warmth comforting her.
“I can’t keep doing this,†she whispered.
“Keep doing what?â€
“Running away,†Rewana looked up into the graying sky and sighed heavily. The clouds were gathering and there was a slight stuffiness in the air around them. The two young dragons stayed awhile, watching the dull puffs of cloud merge together into one massive lump. They didn’t seem to realize the fat drops of water hitting the ground around them with soft plops, and if they did they were ignoring it. Tular looked around nervously, but Rewana seemed in a trance, silently staring into nowhere. A thundering boom overhead shook the trees and Tular jumped up in surprise.
“Rew we should get under cover.†He called through the rain, which was now throwing itself earthwards in sheets. Rewana took no notice, grief clouding her senses. Tular called out again, his voice lost in the howling wind. A bolt of pure electricity shot from the clouds to the grass, a playful spark consuming the wet blades ravenously. The fire leapt skywards as if returning home and it spread across the ground towards the pair of vulnerable dragons. Tular shouted again, vainly trying to bring his friend back into reality, but seeing no other way of doing so he bit her paw. Rewana squealed in pain and jumped up.
“What was that for?!†She lashed out angrily, coming to her senses at last.
“Run!†Tular yelled, guiding Rewana away from the fire. The red tongue lashed lividly towards them as another bolt of lightning thrashed down. The storm was right above them now, the thunder almost constant, pounding at their eardrums. Dodging the flames they fled, unsure of where because the darkness and rain obscured their vision. The pelting water lapped greedily at the grass, which the fire was trying to consume. The two forces acting together against each other created a wind so forceful it hit the dragonlings and knocked them sideways over a shallow cliff. They tumbled headfirst into sticky mud and pools of murky water, but found the cliff sheltered them from the vicious wind.
Panting heavily they rested, clinging to each other in the freezing temperatures to stay alive. The storm raged on, the fire receding in the downpour. Rewana was wailing through the clamour hiding her eyes. Tular stood over her, protecting her. The rain poured over the bank into the soft mud turning it into a mess of flooded ground. Soon their paws were stuck fast in the squelching sludge. Rewana cried out in fear while Tular desperately tried to pull her out, regardless of how deep his efforts left him. He hooked his head under her belly and heaved, her paws rising inch by inch. Lightning shot down nearby and Rewana started, jerking downwards, pushing Tular’s head into the mud. Tular dragged himself out painfully, mud in his eyes and mouth. Chilling water still lashed at them, but the absence of other noises was frightening. No thunder, no lightning, they could hear their own heavy breathing wheezing in their throats. Wide-eyed and vainly attempting to get free of the grasping mud, confused and cold they waited. The silence through the rain was immense, a cold tension hung in the air.
A massive paw gripped the earth above them, armed with five razor sharp claws hungry for blood. A deep growl echoed coldly above as Tokeni’s head peered over, his eyes glinting maliciously against the jet back sky. His scales shining with the wet. Rewana and Tular were filled with such crazed terror they thrashed wildly, desperate to escape their muddy prison.
