Space opera written by a woman , I still can't find it in 12 years...

There is a book I read in the 1980s or 1990s from the Milpitas, Ca library.

It was a hard copy not a paperback

It is not, To Outlive Eternity or Tau Zero by Poul Anderson, I have that one.

It may have been written by a woman or someone whose last name starts with an L

A large crew of men and women are in a new super fast space ship

They are being chased by someone and they outrun the collapse of the universe in a super fast spaceship, but they have lost their home planet.

They watch as the universe is reborn

They go into orbit around a planet that looks like it can support life like theirs. They are moving super fast. They look like a ring of radiation going around the planet.

They put down 10 super metal markers with scientific info onto the surface of the planet

They watch the planet develop and form life like the dinosaurs and then evolve

Into human like life forms.

There are 2 warring countries on the planet.

They block or turn off the sun to freeze the planet and force the countries to form one world government.

The planet gets freezing cold and the people start to freeze.

The countries agree to form one world government.

The people on the ship are welcomed to the planet.

There is something familiar here; but then ideas like this are used over and over so it may be a set of different books that are coming to mind although the notion of trying to induce a world to change by creating a false catastrophe sounds familiar and may be the reason I didn't keep that one around.[not one of my favorite solutions]

Some of this is far enough out there it reminds me of things Greg Bear and Gregory Benford might do but then there is also Frederick Pohl who's stepped pretty far out a few times.

Thanks for the reply. I scanned all 3 authors and their books using Google,
but didn't find the same book. I read the brief description of the books.

I haven't read this book and don't know the title or author, but I am absolutely sure that someone asked about it before here and got a reply. I remember because the idea of them watching the planet evolve at a very fast rate sounded original, even if some of the rest of these idea are over-used.

Hey Dave I see that one mentions something that is perilously close.

Dragon's Egg is a hard science fiction novel written by Robert L. Forward and published in 1980. In the story, Dragon's Egg is a neutron star with a surface gravity 67 billion times that of Earth, and inhabited by cheela, intelligent creatures the size of a sesame seed who live, think and develop a million times faster than humans. Most of the novel, from May to June 2050, chronicles the cheela civilization beginning with its discovery of agriculture to advanced technology and its first face-to-face contact with humans, who are observing the hyper-rapid evolution of the cheela civilization from orbit around Dragon's Egg.

Probably still a bit of a stretch.

Thanks for the replies. No results yet. I have done many book/thread searches. I own several hundred SF books, I keep them in
ABC order so they are easy to find. I have read Dragon's Egg. It is a good read.

have you ever thought of querying your borrowing record at the library? they keep a record of books borrowed on file. it has to do with royalty repayments.

was it a regular hardcover? or an odd sized hardcover?
libraries have their own book binding services. often popular softcovers not available in hardcover would be rebound.
also the science fiction book club would hard coverthe early pulps . libraries often had these copies.

Just to be sure I called them again today and they said they do not keep any records of who checked out a book.

It was posted in the Book Search subforum, surely by definition every post in there is going to be a spoiler!

The general idea is people post books they've read and other people who have read the same books identify them, I don't think that works without being able to detail the book, especially as key identifiers may be the ending or the outcome of significant events in the novel.

All this is true but people can't even find out if they can help without exposing themselves to spoilers if it turns out they don't know the story. It would be good policy to have posters describe all the non-spoilery elements they can, followed by a spoiler-protected section of those spoilery key identifiers.

But this forum is frequently where people first post and don't know rules or how to mark spoilers so it'd be pretty much impossible to enforce. Basically, the Search forum is just a minefield and you takes your chances.

I'm not so worried about spoilers- and since so far no one seems to know what book this is it seems like a moot point.
I'd like to read this book based on the description and would love to see how close the description fits the real story.
But, yes, if you want to avoid spoilers maybe stay out of the book search area.

Just a note, I am an older retired Electronic Engineer from the bay area.
I am not offended by the spoiler talk. Someone can delete the last 3 or 4 lines of my original post , so the ending of the
book won't be shown. Not a big deal to me.
When I first read the book I wrote down the author and title on a 3 by 5 card and put it in a brown leather briefcase with my important papers.
One day I came home from work and my wife confronted me with the card in her hand. She asked me who the woman is.
I told her it is a SF book that I really liked. This memory came back to me a few years ago. I don't know what happened to the card. My ex wife died from cancer a few years ago, so she is not talking. I own about 1,000 SF books. I built a bookcase just for SF books.
I have searched by plot a few times, I do get Tau Zero as an option, but it is not the same book.
I have searched for female SF authors but it has not worked. I am still working on it. Richard 01-05-2016

Richardb35 - not sure if you’re still checking this forum and your posts but I’ve been working on your query. It’s sort of a “white whale” for me.

I have a few questions that I’m wondering if you can answer. I may be very close to solving this.

1. Was the title of the book the name of the ship?
2. Were the crew of the ship human?
3. Do you recall anything at all about the cover? Colors? Shapes? If so, was the ship on the cover?
