Hi everyone!

I would love your opinions on some promising new talent in the sci-fi world? I always love reading a first novel from an unknown author and seeing how their world views are different from the more traditional.

Does anyone have some names and/or book titles of sci-fi authors that they have read which really impressed them for a first time book/author?

Love to hear it!
:)

Hey a fellow South African, welcome!! But to your post, I wouldn't know, I haven't read much SF, but the peeps on this forum are highly knowledgeable.

Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie
Fortune's Pawn by Rachel Bach
Leviathan Wakes by James S A Corey (he's still newish right?)

Hi guys, thanks for the quick response!

And howzit to biodroid :)

Will any of you guys read more books by these authors? Yes/No? How did they compare with the greats?

I'll tip a nod for Chris Beckett. His first, The Holy Machine, showed huge promise and his second (I think) Dark Eden was incredible and, deservedly, won the Clarke award last year. Will I read him again? Heck, yes, I can't wait til I see what he does with the sequel. :)

Brand new: "Starshine --- Aurora Rising" G. S. Jennsen. This is full blown space opera, complete with a mystery, aliens, romance, and a very engaging heroine. I just finished this and rated it 5 stars, which I don't give out easily. I am certainly looking forward to the next in the series, --- this is called book 1, so I'm fairly confident here.

Fairly new: "Quicker" by Laurence E. Dahners.
This is the first book in what has become a series of shorter novels (I don't think they qualify as novellas.) In a remarkable turn of events each of the stories gets better and the characters develop. Ell Donsaii, is a heroine of the first order, and these would qualify as books that are enjoyable to read, but not necessarily great literature.

Richard Phillips. He has a trilogy out now and will release at least two more (prequels sort of) involving how his main characters, Jack "Ripper" Gregory and Janet Price, met and started working together. I read his first book based on the positive comments by Orson Scott Card.

Edit: correction, I was just looking at Amazon's site and noticed that "Once Dead" is already available. You could read this before the Rho Agenda series if you want to know Jack and Janet better before starting. There is a sequel of sorts to Once Dead that will also be out shortly.

The Second Ship (The Rho Agenda, Book One): Richard Phillips: 9781612184937: Amazon.com: Books

I imagine you hit the "quote" button instead of the "edit" -- it's very easily done (and rather embarrassing when done the other way round and you find yourself editing someone else's post instead of quoting it... -- fortunately a mistake only a mod can make!)

If you want to have another go, I'll bin the unnecessary posts, to keep the thread nice and tidy.

Yeah, I might have done that on the first attempt but on the second try I was very deliberate about using the edit function. I'm using Safari on an iPad and I sometimes get weird behavior on this and one other forum, like cursors disappearing. Maybe it's just my old model iPad.
