Gemmell's most dangerous/deadliest character

That's true but if your going for hero in the shadows then don't forget three swords, i mean even Decado and Skilgannon both taking him on would have some trouble considering he's literally inhuman! I mean Skilgannon had to train for years with his balance but three swords was born or more accurately reborn with even better balance, reflexes, etc as well as having a few life times to hone his skills.

P.S I loved the part(as evil as it may be) where three swords juggled his swords and killed the three noblemen with them in a matter of seconds that was pretty bad @$$.

I think I might make a post/ poll on just DG swordsmen, considering its quite unfair for all the melees when there's Shannow with guns and Waylander with a crossbow.

You are so right, i clear forgot about THREESWORDS, although he wasn't a re-born he was a Jiamad (or Joining). I totally agree with the juggling/ slaying, but also loved the fact that he regretted killing the Dukes wife as killing women didn't fit in with the whole warrior life.
I must admit that i haven't read the Shannow novels, but then when i think of heroic fantasy guns just don't really seem to fit that niche ;)
If you are going to make a post on DG swordsmen then i shall definately have to read and post

Hi All Just stumbled onto this site, I have read all Gemmells books several times.
Love his stuff.
Didn't Waylander get un-naturally long life when he was healed by the monster Kai (think that was his name) which would mean that when Ustarte said that at the end of Hero in the shadows Druss would have been born and in actual fact would have been on his way to rescue Rowena...
Also Does anybody know anything about the thief who stole the armour of bronze which was referenced by Harod in "The Swords Of Night And Day" He referred to him as Lascerin or something like that...
I feel like we are missing much of DGs Drenai Saga... The War Of The Twins and this Lascerin fella who stole the armour of bronze only to hide it so it could be discovered in the times of the re-born.
And by the way, the deadliest character in all his books has to Hewla the witch. A priestess of the resurrection turned evil. It was she who forged the swords of night and day and claimed the demon from snaga. She features a lot in the drenai saga. Not to be trfled with.
Peace out

I don't know...entering late by the way, hi.

Were the question who is the greatest warrrior, or greatest swordsman, or something else it would be a different answer...but in spite of all, for the deadliest I'd go with Waylander...hands down.

As a Killer Shannow over Waylaner to me. Waylander more skill but Shannow uncanny knack for killing, shooting.

Druss is class. As much as I like waylander druss would have him in seconds. But the deadliest and the best swordsman is the same man. It's culain. He lived for thousands of years and killed the best warriors of every generation. He spent thousands of years honing his skills and sipstrassi kept him young and strong. All the other guys in this thread were the best of their generation. Culain was the best of every generation. Men against boys.

Hector, Achilles, Aeneas, Argurios, Kalliades, Banokles etc. are all walking with Ares in the Elysian fields. Dining with one another every night in the Hall of Heroes. Herakles is there with them too.

"But where is Druss, Skilgannon, Waylander, Decado, Culain n Co.?" one asks Achilles.

"Don't know," says Achilles. "Aint seen them around here yet."

Argurios, Pagan ( what 9 - 11 Joinings by himself ) protecting the kids

First post :D Gemmell is by far my favourite author - have all the books and will often reread them (nice quick reads generally).

That last scene of Pagan's made me tearup :( and his regrets over the fire too. Great scene. Soooo wish DG was still with us I recon Pagan would have gotten his own book at some point.

I'm with The Damned - Hewla wins for sure - no one more deadly in any of the novels (and Druss wouldnt even lift his axe to her ;) damn code).

Wonder if Waylander could beat Shannow if they both used revolvers...though more likely they would go looking for Jerusalem together .

A swordsman could kill Druss but Druss would cleave them in two before dying.

Culain is right about Culain lach Feragh he is in a class of his own - I think even The Potter and Three Swords would have trouble with the Lance Lord.

(Wonder if Stella will oneday let new authors write in Gemmell's world? Personally as long as the novels were up to standard I would love to read them).

Waylander as the overall deadliest individual.

Decado as the best swordsman.

Druss as the best warrior.

Waylander could probably kill you in a myriad of ways you hadn't considered..(leading you to die in a peanut related injury-the mortification), but hes "merely excellent" with sabre or sword - you MIGHT have a slight chance
Decado/Skilgannon/Dace could carve the alphabet on your chest BEFORE killing you..but I always visualise them as "average sized men" that one VERY lucky thrust could in theory stop.
Ulric/Talisman could set about half a million Nadir on your heels, but they still have to find you!

Leaving of course...
Druss, he defends mountain passes, fortresses, and shrines with equal aplomb, and is probably responsible for depopulating several small to medium sized countries virtually single handedly.
To get to Druss you have to get in range of Snaga, which as a lifestyle choice doesn't rank up there with the cleverest decisions.
Deadliest individual has got to be him as you get the feeling that even if you DID manage to land that one lucky shot that somehow bypassed Snaga and pierced dead centre of his heart, he'd look at you, sniff...and say "now Laddie youve gone and upset me..." and promptly split you down the middle before begrudgingly agreeing to ALLOW death to lead him to the void.

I have to say that Jaim is the deadliest of all. Like myself he would do anything to protect those he loves. Just look at how he saved Maeve. No way waylander, druss or even shannow could have done that

Of all the great and deadly characters in Gemmels work, I can't see how anyone but Druss the Legend could take the top spot.

First, Druss was a controlled baresark. Utterly fearless and relentless, yet calculating and wily.

His competition were all great sword fighters, but Gemmel showed several times how they were helpless against his size, skill, strength and ferocity. There is no parrying Snaga!

Bodasen was a fantastic swordsman, if not of the caliber of Skilgannon or Decado, and it took Druss all of 2 seconds to kill him.

Then there is Waylander, the greatest assassin of all time. But throughout the series, not only was Druss the best, but the luckiest. I think that if Waylander had Druss' head in the sights of his crossbow, Druss would have slipped just as the trigger was pulled, or a branch falls from a tree, or something to cause the killing blow to miss by a fraction, and then it would have been all over Waylander.

This, of course, is all my biased opinion, and perhaps the most delightfully geeky topic to ever grace a forum, and I love it. :)

someone said tenaka khan as best leader. i would have to say parmenion for that role and he was pretty hard to boot with his spartan training (sword in the fire scene at darius's camp as example) as for most deadliest i would have to go with bane, even rage said he would be better than him or voltan. and we all know rigante make the best fighters.

I think Waylander, not because he was the strongest or most skillfull but he was for me the canniest of them all. :)

I think Waylander is his deadliest character, the man is cold, intelligent and calculating, and more importantly, he is an ambush predator, a very deadly combination indeed.

In fact as an older man in the latest "Hero in the Shadows" Waylander kills a particularly lethal demon (the name of which currently escapes me), the demon's demise marked by Waylander muttering "time to die." The man is unstoppable.

In my opinion, the greatest swordsman was Tenaka Khan.

I would have to go with waylander he deadliest assassin, and he knows when someone is behind him like in waylanderII when he was kneeling by grave, the guy was about to shoot him , but ended up getting killed by him, something like that.

Druss is class. As much as I like waylander druss would have him in seconds.

Precisely. If Druss can manage to fight whilst poisoned and perform feats of strength whilst malnourished then I doubt any conventional weaponry, no matter how sharp or well aimed, would bring him down very easily.

As for best swordsman, who needs a sword when you have Snaga?

There is no parrying Snaga!

This.

Try to parry that behemoth and you'll end up with more than just a snapped blade.

Hmmmm and interesting topic . . . .

I think Chio/Dace in my opinion was the best swordsmen; but an honorable mention to Mulgrave is in order.

Most dangerous? Surely the Moidart has to be in there with the likes of Druss? I mean the man was utterly ruthless and never played by the normal rules.

Anyways that's my 2 pence thrown in . . . . and yes I expect change.
