Why did society lose interest in space and space themed sci fi in the early 2010s?

I remember right after BSG ended in 2009 TV show producers lost interest in making anything set in space until just recently.

What happened? Did space lose it's sense of wonder? Did we become more cynical of humanity's future? Did we become more interested in wealth and materialism? I remember reality shows dominating this time period.

Did vapid materialism kill interest in space exploration?

Were superheroes, zombies, and medieval fantasy much more relatable?

Is there room for more than one pop culture phenomenon? If there was a space sci fi show that was on the level of quality of Game of Thrones or TWD would it have a chance to become as big as those shows or is space themed stories simply too "weird" or too "unrelatable"?

Could a show based on KSR's "Mars Trilogy" be a hit with the mainstream if it was of prestige TV quality? Elon Musk's SpaceX as well as movies like "The Martian" has showed there is a lot of interest for Mars.

How about Iain M. Bank's Culture? Is the mainstream ready for a sci fi universe that crazy?

We need optimistic space adventure without rubber suited aliens.

I don't think it did.

My semi-informed thoughts: TV producers have no idea what will be popular next at any given moment, so they are constantly taking wild guesses about future trends. Since TV producers are highly herd-like, this guessing process sometimes itself creates the trend.
what about that reboot of Blake 7. When are they going to get around giving us that?

We had Dark Matter and Killjoys. Both were decent SF TV and I would've loved to have seen Dark Matter completed. Vagrant Queen only lasts for one series, which is a shame as it sounded very promising. We also have Star Trek: Discovery and ST: Picard. I did read that Farscape was returning to TV for a new series.

The trouble with SF TV is that it's so darn expensive to make.
