The Eye of the Beholder

Tails bottlebrushed, lips snarled.

“What kind of beings are these Chronoids, anyway?

A pair of cute, adorable fluffballs, and not one eye leaves its screen nor stroking hand abandons mouse for seduction and torment.

Regard bewhiskered, furry faces; who could believe retracting claws are dripping blood? No malice in eyes alight with playfulness; we could never be planning to steal your soul.

Assuming, obviously, we could find out where you've hidden it."

Disposal

They wait on the ridge overlooking the valley. The signal comes and the order is given:

“No quarter, no prisoners”

Led by the greatest hero of the age, the human army spreads out and moves in

Soon the orc village is burning and the slaughter begins.

“But sire, they are mere children”

“Pups”

“The youngest are just babes-in-arms!”

“Nits breed lice” said the hero, grim-faced, and raised his (nameless) sword.....

Innocence Burns

He opened his eyes and saw the armoured figure standing over him.
“Come with me boy” the voice frightening and hollow sounding.
Scared he reached up and allowed the huge metal clad hand to grasp his and pull him to his feet.
The boy sniffled.
“Where’s my...”
“You’ll see them soon boy. Trust me.”
The figure led him out into the noise and chaos outside. Two burned black figures swung from newly erected gallows.

A Taste Of The Unnatural

‘Why would you eat us when grass is so abundant?’ the lamb asked.

‘Because the taste of meat and blood is better,’ replied the alpha wolf.

‘Is it really?’ contemplated the lamb. ‘You should know the wizard will not have innocent blood spilled in his realm.’

In answer, the wolves moved in, tightening the circle.

---

That night, spits turned over a fire.

The wizard’s prized flock discovered new tastes and grass lost its appeal.

Like A Lamb…

Burt was losing heavily at cards – too much whisky. He was in no mood for interruptions but there was that knock again!

He staggered to the door and yanked it open to reveal a small, strange looking character.

“What you want?”

“Take me to your leader.”

Something wasn’t quite right but Burt was never one to turn down an opportunity when he saw one.

“You heard of stud poker?”

“Is he your leader?”

Burt smiled.

A Good Man Goes To War

Markus knelt before the loose soil, clawing at it with his fingers. ‘You always said we should run, that they wouldn’t find us, but I never listened. How could we abandon our life here?’

‘Kaila misses you. Every day she asks me when you’re coming home.’ He forced back his tears and stood.

Slowly, Markus drew his sword. ‘I’m listening now, but it’s too late to run.’

The blade turned black in his hand.

A Wise Man's Foretelling

In a sense it was his innocence that allowed him to do it; the irony being the very act that made him the greatest legendary king of all, would also claim his state of bliss.

I saw it all in prophecy. When I saw again through my real eyes, I realised he was damned in his glory.

As the sword came free someone cried, “Est ce libre!”

The gathered natives twisted the words, “Excalibur!”

Après moi le deluge

And on the last day the King shook off the apothecaries, gingerly made his way down the stairs, ducked through the servants’ entrance, sat near the oak tree, and watched the children play.

He did not think of the blood on his hands or the flood of peasants pressing against the walls.

Instead he listened to naught but the wheeze of his breath and the laughter of children, until at last they both faded away.

Bound

At sunset, the eagle looked up from his belly; its eyes accusing, its beak bloodied and gore-spattered. It flew off, leaving him to his lonely torment.

Dawn. He woke; his arms still chained, his skin and viscera intact once more.

A gull crept along the rock. "Father," it whispered. "Please, tell them. This should be my punishment."

He shook his head and pushed it away, just before the eagle returned for its daily feast.

The Price We Pay
------------------------

Runt had chopped his hand off.

“Well actually,” he amended. “I got Duck to do it for me.”

“How?”

“Half a tub of absinthe. Knocked me out. Then he did it with Chief’s knife.”

Sam eyed the disfigured stump, chewing his bottom lip. “Was it worth it?”

Runt shrugged. “Make five times as much on the street now. Plus the pigs don’t hassle me half as bad.”

“Reckon he could do it for me?”

“Sure.”

The Caper

Meaghan fluttered nervously... they have to let him go... they just have to.

ORDER!! I CALL ORDER!

First charge: Hoofing pixie dust near an elementary school.

Second charge: Aiding and abetting a Satyr.

Third charge: Most foully "sparkling" all over a family of Gnomes, effectively smothering them to death.

The jury spoke, the crowds roared approval!

Meaghan somersaulted midair, scarcely believing their luck. He was right, that horny nag -- no one ever suspects the Unicorn.

ORIGINS

“They’re just children. Please?”

“I’m sorry. The Councils decision is final. They may be just children now, but their destructive force is unlike any other we’ve seen. Allowing them to develop is to condemn endless peoples to death. Their race must be extinguished.”

***********************************

Smuggled refugees were left on a distant planet, in a forgotten backwater of the universe. They grew, adapted, survived and developed.

They called their planet ‘Earth’.

***********************************

The fight for survival begins.

Childish Game

'What now, Alice?' I asked, already exasperated.

'Play with me!'

'No, I have the ironing to do.'

'PLAY WITH ME!'

'No!'

The iron's cord whipped around my neck, the plug catching me on the temple. The iron itself orbited my head, tightening the cord and cutting of my breath.
I was losing consciousness, as the iron's hot plate finally slammed in...

'What now, Alice?' I asked, already exasperated.

'Play with me?'

'OK. What?'

'Deja vu?'

Making a Killing

"All those innocent victims," the consul moaned. "Will you take him away?"

He'd only killed a dozen or so, the lowest of the low at that. Already they sought relief.

"Everyone's guilty of something." I shrugged. "Do you have my fee?"

Purse bulging, I escorted the prisoner to my ship.

A galaxy away, I dropped him once again, on a new planet.

I'd come back in a few years, when London was ready to deal.

Innocent list

"Next!" He called. "Guilty or innocent?"

"Innocent." Came the reply, this made Death sigh.

"No-one is innocent." His voice boomed, " board the boat."

A girl, Death looked down with what passed for a frown. "Guilty or Innocent?" He asked.

The girl smiled. "Innocent, I beileve."

Death did sigh, " no one is inno-" he looked at the list the innocence column had a name. "Ah, I need to call my supervisor."

Virgin’s Touch

Feelings of warmth, peace, and love absorbed Elly.

Another step.

Reaching out, a longing to but touch such a majestic creature suffused her. The aura grew stronger laced with apprehension and hope. It bent it's head, inviting.

Another step.

Elly’s hand fell upon it’s cheek. The feelings absorbed her, they were complete. A moment, an eternity later that connection brought pain, and horror.

Howling, the goblins fired again as they descended on the last unicorn.

Unseelie Court

Haldred Firethorn’s inner sense – that which protects – pricked at his immortal core. In a sense, his guilt was never in question: in no sense was this eldritch court “fair” or “just”: in essence, this was trial-by-nature; his soul weighed against the uncaring sap-swell of truth.

“But it’s my given name,” he protested to no avail.

“Giver or Taker; no excuse.”

Incense thickened the dubious air in the hollows beneath the Faerie Oak.

Now Haldred weeps…eternally.

Addiction

His addiction was worse than Hell. Much to his despair, Charon found himself hunting on earth again. Any human would suffice, but most would not satisfy him.

Charon’s addiction was more than physical. Only the sweetmeat of the unsullied young gave pleasure.

A little girl approached.

She smiled sweetly. “Hi.”

It would have melted a human heart.

Charon’s was inflamed. “Hi, sweet cheeks.”

He touched her cheek. She writhed. For a moment he was whole.

Past Lost------Innocence Gained

The blood-red sunset blinded me as I crossed the dusty street.
I never saw the buckboard that ran me down, I would learn of this much later.

I awoke in a strange place, a woman in white trousers and white coat asking questions; name?, date of birth?, insurance? I could remember nothing. "Doctor", she called out!

Thus began a brief period of innocence as I learned to live in the 21st century.

Recycled

Dear Grandma,

You are going to be Recycled – so I have to write you. Mum says Next World is nice. I want to know if you get to choose. Are you going to be plastic now? Like a toy? I would like to be a robot. Can you be made into metal? When you wake up you can read this. But I don’t know if you’ll get to have eyes.

Happy Recycling Day!

Love,

Jonathan
