Twin snow leopard cubs, now 8 weeks old made their first public appearance. They are yet to be named - a male and a female - are being reared by their first-time mother Samarra. The cubs' fur has black spots on it and they have big white paws.

There are just 4500 snow leopards in the wild, living in parts of India, Nepal, Tibet and through Russia, China and Mongolia. They are on the critically endangered spcies list.

I think its such a shame that we're ousting so many other creatures off our planet... And not simply the 'cute' ones: I mourn the Stella's Seacow...

Also, a friend was telling me of a program on the telly, recently, about child-eating-leopards in India. As well as the wolves who didnt know how to hunt and also ended up praying upon kids :(

Sorry, this isnt a 'rant' thread, but any 'good' news is oh-so-tainted...

The good news might be a little tainted HG but at least it is a start...:)

How awful that the animals have to attack the people...their real prey must be really in short supply for them to have to do that. :(

I dont believe its a case of 'animals have to attack people' - we are creatures of the Earth and always have been some creatures possible dinner ticket - where else do all our horrors arise from? And the fact we're so communicative further adds to our fears...

The animals in question were interfered with in one way or another. People stepped in without understanding and thought as to their consequenses - such as with the wolves: some woman brought them up and they didnt know how to hunt. Being wily and dangerous they got away with their antics for too long right amidst the folks that had raised them :(
Nature is best left alone and respected just so.

we must step aside from our thoughts for Humans to be a different kind of creature than animals. We are animals. and by good weird ones. If there are people here from the us who believe in creationism, I am sorry, In my opinion Darwin was (partly) right!

we need to stand up against our own destructiveness towards other animals.
Why kill everything? Why burn everything? The world will be boring, monotone and dead. We moarn about the extinction of certain species, yet some just keep on killing...

I see what you mean now HG...interference by people as you say certainly does not help our wildlife. However, the lack of food, also caused by humans when clearing the land for farming, will also have a detrimental effect upon the wild animals that once lived and hunted there.

Where wildlife has been almost wiped out in some areas, I think it is our obligation to do what we can to help preserve those which are left. As is the case with the snow leopard cubs.

Cornelius - I do believe that those who poach or who are inhumane have no right to the name 'animals'. There is not a word that would describe them accurately. I don't have the answers as to why some people poach or kill our wildlife...All I know is that I will always do as much as I possibly can to preserve our fauna and flora.
