Book Hauls!

The first of my recent purchases arrived (they take a while up here).

I have recently made another run at finishing my original release SF Masterworks collection and I am getting oh so close, at least with the paperbacks. I picked up a couple of Fantasy Masterworks over the years but have never made them a priority but I have started to think about grabbing them a little more as the SF Masterworks has introduced me to so many authors that I never would have read otherwise.

I didn't even know there was a Crime Masterworks series until the other day but I would like to vary my reading and so...

The Chronicles of Amber - Roger Zalanzy (Fantasy Masterworks)
The Choirboys - Joseph Wambaugh (Crime Masterworks)
Sherlock Holmes's Greatest Cases - Arthur Conan Doyle (Crime Masterworks)
Rogue Male - Geoffrey Household (Crime Masterworks)

Me, neither. LibraryThing lists them and the list, from what I've already read on it or read about titles on it, looks impressive.

My vintage paperback of Rogue Male disappeared so long ago that I am considering getting another copy (a cheap one somewhere). The missing book looked liked this:

I haven't read that one, AE, but I've read The Maltese Falcon, The Big Knockover, The Postman Always Rings Twice, and 11 others, and I found them all good or better than good. Also, McBain has a great reputation and what I did read by him years ago was entertaining, even if it didn't grip me like the books by Hammett, Sjowall & Wahloo or Ross Macdonald.

Here are my purchases so far this year: perhaps one too many Benedict novels (though it was okay), the completion of the Datlow Omni anthologies and a large subset of van Vogt, and one step higher on Mt. Asimov.

Ok maybe I got a bit carried away online shopping the other night... and I think there's still another couple on the way.

It will continue to be as I find them but I am definitely collecting the Fantasy Masterworks series now (original covers).

The Book of the New Sun, Volume 1 : Shadow and Claw - Gene Wolfe
The Book of the New Sun, Volume 2 : Sword and Citadel - Gene Wolfe
Beauty - Sherri S. Tepper
The First Book of Lankhmar -Fritz Leiber
The Anubis Gates - Tim Powers
The Forgotten Beasts of Eld - Patricia A. McKillip

The Conan Chronicles, Volume 1 : The People of the Black Circle - Robert E. Howard
Behold the Man - Michael Moorcock

Behold the Man I only grabbed because it was cheap and I only have one of them. Yep, after decades of collecting SF Masterworks one and two at a time I jagged an ebay bulk lot sale, started off just buying what I was missing and then decided just to grab the lot and so now I kind of have one and a half collections of the series.

These two are very different

The Penultimate Truth - P.K. Dick
Pavane - Keith Roberts

Both of these have been impossible to find, in fact I was told by a specialist book store that The Penultimate Truth was never actually printed. Absolutely wrapped to have found these two copies and I now have one single book missing from the original 70 paperbacks released (The Space Merchants - Cyril M. Kornbluth and Frederick Pohl).
