Thomas Robert Ligotti
born Detroit, Michigan: 9 July 1953
Thomas Ligotti is an American author of horror fiction (Lovecraftian horror, gothic fiction, weird fiction, cosmic horror, supernatural horror and dark fantasy), as short stories, novellas, poetry and essays, and he has also been an editor.
He does not write novels, but he has written 2 books of non-fiction lay philosophy, and his works have been adapted into 2 graphic novels.
His works have been described as works of philosophical horror, often written as works of philosophy but with a dark undertone, and often described as pessimistic and nihilistic.
His first works published was Allan & Adelaide: An Arabesque (1981) in Fantasy Macabre.
During the 1980’s his work frequently appeared in American small press horror publications such as Nyctalops (devoted to H. P. Lovecraft) including the trilogy The Chymist (1981), Drink to Me Only with Labyrinthine Eyes (1982) and Eye of the Lynx (1983); and in other fanzines such as The Punk-Surrealist Cafe.
He was contributing editor to Grimoire from 1982 to 1985 and then associate editor at Gale Research.
His first collection of short stories was Songs of a Dead Dreamer (1986). His second collection was Grimscribe: His Lives and Works (1991).
He is probably best known for the Penguin Classics imprint, Songs of a Dead Dreamer and Grimscribe (2015), which made him one of only 10 living writers among the hundreds the imprint has published in the U.S., and brought his work to a wider audience.
He is also known as being something of a reclusive literary cult figure.
Ligotti also collaborated with Current 93 on the three of their music albums.
His most recent work was Pictures of Apocalypse (2023), a collection of 20 new poems.
